Was auf Ihren Geräten bleibt

I have not appointed a data protection officer because there is no legal obligation to do so.

In short

The Pith apps have no user account, no advertising, no statistics and no tracking, and they contain no third-party software that sends data. I run no server that the apps use. I do not receive or store personal data about you through the apps and I cannot read your conversations.

What stays on your devices

Your conversations, settings, downloaded models and a small security log are on your devices. The security log records what Pith refused or blocked (for example a message that was too large), never what you wrote. It leaves the device only if you export it yourself.

iCloud (Apple)

So that iPhone and Mac can exchange messages, Pith uses your private CloudKit storage at Apple (container iCloud.com.tiborczekay.pith, private database). This storage belongs to your Apple account. I have no access to it. Apple Distribution International Ltd. and Apple Inc. process the data under the terms you have with Apple for iCloud.

Pith seals content itself before it leaves your device: message text, reply text, titles and system prompts are encrypted with AES-GCM. The key is created on your devices and passed between them through iCloud Keychain, which Apple describes as end-to-end encrypted. Each record is bound to its own identifier, so it cannot be moved onto another record.

Not sealed, and therefore visible to Apple and in your iCloud storage, is this metadata:

  • record types, identifiers and timestamps,
  • the state of a job (queued, picked up, writing, done, failed, cancelled, stale) and, on failure, a reason code (hourly limit, model missing, error, timeout),
  • the role of a message (you or the model) and its order,
  • per conversation: the chosen model and the temperature, and whether it was deleted,
  • per device: device name, role (Mac or iPhone), time of the last heartbeat, status (idle, loading, writing), installed models, active model, app version,
  • the number of older messages left out of a reply.

What appears in those fields (for example a device name) is your own choice.

Pith also keeps two display settings in the iCloud key-value storage of your Apple account, so they match on all your devices: the colour and the brightness of the light in the background. These values are not encrypted and say nothing about your conversations.

Direct connection on Wi-Fi

On the same network the iPhone and Mac find each other over Bonjour (service type _pith._tcp, the service name is a random string with no link to you). They prove to each other that they hold a secret derived from your key, and the connection is encrypted afterwards. Devices on the same network can see that a Pith service is running but cannot read any content. After repeated failed attempts the Mac locks the other side out for a while. Each connection also uses one-time keys, so recorded traffic stays unreadable even if your key became known later. You can turn the direct link off in the Mac's settings, for example on hotel Wi-Fi. Everything then goes through iCloud.

Model download (Hugging Face)

The Mac app downloads a model only when you press “Download”. It then connects to huggingface.co, fetches the file list and downloads the files. Hugging Face (Hugging Face, Inc., USA) sees your IP address and the chosen model. Hugging Face's privacy notices apply. Apart from iCloud, the Apple notification service and this download, Pith opens no internet connections.

Notifications

So that the Mac notices new messages and the iPhone notices finished replies, iCloud uses the Apple notification service. The notification “Reply ready” is a generic text with no content from your conversation. On the iPhone Pith asks for permission when you send your first message.

These web pages

This policy is published on tiborczekay.com. The website privacy policy explains what data a visit to the website involves. If you email me or use the contact form, I use your details only to answer your request; that policy has the details.

Children

Pith is not meant for children under 16. I collect no data from children. If you are under 16, use Pith only with the consent of your parents.

Retention and deletion

I store nothing about you. Your data is on your devices and in your iCloud storage until you delete it. In the app, “Delete all my data” deletes the conversations on the device and in iCloud and the key, and on the Mac also the downloaded models. Details are under Delete your data.

Your rights

Where I process personal data about you, you can ask for access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18) and data portability (Art. 20), and object to processing under Art. 21 GDPR. An informal message to the email address above is enough. Because I store nothing about you through the apps, I can usually only confirm that nothing exists (Art. 11 GDPR). You manage your data in iCloud at Apple.

You can complain to a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR). The one responsible for me is the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision (lda.bayern.de). There are no automated decisions within the meaning of Art. 22 GDPR.

A note on AI output

A language model can write wrong or unsuitable text. Pith does not check replies for content. The model runs on your Mac, and it has no access to the internet or to other programs.

Changes

If the apps or the services they use change, I will update this notice. The date above shows its status.
